• Drives Get Faster, Pack More Features   [Roundup, PCWorld]
  We evaluated five of the latest internal IDE DVD burners--Lite-On's $75 SHW-1635S, Pioneer's $90 DVR-R100, Plextor's $105 PX-740A and $155 PX-716AL (a slot-loading model), and Sony's $100 DRU-810A--and two external drives, LG's $180 Super-Multi GSA-2166D and Samsung's $200 WriteMaster SE-W164C. All seven drives made our chart, which includes three previously tested models, Asus's DRW-1608P, Samsung's TS-H552U, and Plextor's PX-716UF. Our Best Buys, though, went to two of the newcomers, the Pioneer and the LG.

• Sony DRU-810A: New Chipset, New Performance   [Review, AnandTech]
  Sony has a track record for switching chipsets as they move along from model to model. The DRU-540A used the same Sanyo chipset that is used in the PX-712A. Upon entering the 16x game, Sony switched to MediaTek as its supplier for the servo controller and analog signal processor for the DRU-710A/720A units. Now, Sony has changed their chipset to that used in BenQ’s DW1640 as well as Plextor’s PX-740A.

• Plextor PX-740A   [Review, overclockersonline]
  So where exactly do we sit with the Plextor PX-740A? The drive certainly does amazingly well. The speed was a bit jittery but in the end the Plextor PX-740A got the job done by meeting its specifications and writing a perfect disc. While the Scan Disc did report the odd problem, it's nothing to be concerned about as our LiteOn Error Checks came back negative. Even with "only" 2MB of buffer, Plextor is a brand you can associate with coaster free burning. You can be assured that they won't be cutting corners on the quality of writing.

  Being a major player in the optical drive market, Lite-On is no stranger to the latest technologies available. For instance, Lite-On currently offers several drives capable of writing to DVD+R DL media and one of these drives (the SOHW- 1653S) offers write speeds as fast as any other drive available today for almost any media. The drive also comes with a decent software package, which includes Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator, Roxio DVD Max, PhotoSuite 5 SE and PlexTools Pro. Ahead Nero is missing from this bundle.
