Taipei, Taiwan in september is a warm and perpetually busy place. Postponed from its original time slot in June, Computex 2003 had easily put SARS behind it and the focus was now turned to providing results. The last year has not been an easy one for the computer industry, and ensuring that 2004 is, belies the point that real jobs are on the line in the computer manufacturers. Computex 2003 - Day 1: DX9 Mayhem and Mobile Graphics [Article, AnandTech]
Well we are here at Computex, and the buzz surrounding NVIDIA and DX9 [particularly Half-Life 2] hasn’t let up. As a matter of fact, it is the hot topic of many under the table talks between video card manufacturers and their respective customers. Our latest mobile look into the latest and greatest for NVIDIA and ATI didn’t leave much room for argument on the DirectX 9 front. Meanwhile, the industry buzz is still debating about who has legitimate claim in this controversy. There are suggestions that ATI and Valve have been conspiring, and Valve specifically coded their image quality paths to ATI hardware. This is really hard to validate since there are other DX9 games that show similar [though with less intense margins] results between NVIDIA and ATI hardware. Computex 2003 Day 1 Coverage [Article, LegionHardware]
Computex 2003 has now officially started, and already this years show looks to be more promising than the last. Early this morning, after registering for the show, I migrated over to ‘Hall 2’ where the majority of motherboard manufacturers had setup camp along with a few graphics card makers and VIA Technologies. The biggest booths were of course owned by the major manufacturers such as MSI, Gigabyte, VIA, ECS, ASUS and so on. Already there have been a number of products that have caught my eye. While most of these products have been based on VIA chipsets there were also a few interesting graphics products that I will get to shortly. Computex Fall 2003: Day One [Article, TomsHardware]
Once again, it's Computex time. Though the show is starting approximately three and a half months later due to SARS. Today, hardly anybody talks about it any more, just as if it had never been a problem. I just hope it doesn't return, since the damage to the economy in Asia was quite huge - not even mentioned the human casualties. Tue, 23 Sep, 2003 | 4 Click(s) | Related: Reviews or Talks | Detail
The Intel v. AMD Performance War: You Lose [Editorial, TomsHardware]
Is the enthusiast community being taken for a ride in this latest round of the CPU wars? Does AMD want enthusiasts to give it an interest free loan while they wait for 64-bit computing to go mainstream? Has Intel lost the PR battle before it has begun? Inside Intel's Secretive 'LaGrande' Project [Article, ExtremeTech]
After being introduced at IDF in Fall 2002 with sparse details, Intel finally disclosed a fair amount of technical information regarding its upcoming LaGrande safe computing initiative. LaGrande defines hardware and chipset modifications required to support secure computing environments such as Microsoft's Next Generation Secure Computing Base (NGSCB) formerly known as Palladium (check out www.microsoft.com/ngscb). A few months ago at the WinHEC trade show, Microsoft released in-depth information regarding NGSCB (pronounced ing-scub), and we still owe you a deep explorative. In this story, I'll provide a quick review of the need for secure computing (though it is quite obvious), and delve into key functional aspects of both NGSCB and LaGrande, with emphasis on LaGrande-specific components. I had the wonderful opportunity to review Logitech’s MOMO Force racing wheel, and I fell in love with it on the first lap.
