  • Nokia 8800   [Review, Hexus]
While there's no doubt that there is a demand for the 8800, with many retailers reporting it outstripping supply, it has to be said that there is no real technical reason why you should want to own an 8800. Its old technology in a new shell and even that loses its appeal very quickly.

  • Lian Li F1: The Desk As the Computer   [Review, AnandTech]
Every once in a while, a new product so different enters the computer market such that we actually have to deviate a bit from our normal article categories just to write about it. Since the summary of this article on the front page has already given away the fact that this is about a computer workstation, it is plausible that one would think, "but there is nothing new about desks...they have been around for a very long time." This is most certainly true to an extent, but the Lian Li F1 and F2 are not your average computer desks by any stretch of the imagination.

  • A Newbie's Introduction to DEFCON   [Article, TomsNetworking]
For the person not familiar with DEFCON, it can be an overwhelming experience. DEFCON is unlike any typical convention that you might go to. It's also a huge success. It was started thirteen years ago by Jeff Moss who goes by the handle "Dark Tangent" and has grown to a massive event with dozens of speakers and an audience of over five thousand people. The activities include many contests and lectures, as well as many open discussions throughout the convention grounds. Both formal and informal discussion is aided by the DEFCON hotel (the Alexis Park Hotel in Las Vegas) being completely rented out by DEFCON attendees for the three days of the conference.

  • Planon Docupen R700: The World's Lightest Document Scanner?   [Review, TomsHardware]
You usually think of a full-page document scanner as a tabletop device, much larger and heavier than a few sheets of printing paper. That does not have to be the case as Planon proves with its Docupen R700: It weighs a mere 2 oz / 57 grams and measures just 8 x 1/2" / 205 x 12.7 mm. That makes it about as heavy as ten sheets of standard 8 ˝" x 11" printing paper and around the size of a fountain pen.

  • What can a VoIP phone system do for small business?   [Article, bonafidereviews]
Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, is a term used to describe the transmission of telephone calls using a data network, rather than over traditional phone lines. It is a simple concept, but one that is having a very significant impact on the world of business communications. VoIP is itself enabled by a much broader technological evolution, namely the convergence of multiple forms of communication, including voice, video and data, into a single network. This transformation is creating a revolution in the way communications works, and it has the potential to offer major benefits to your business. It can help your company grow by broadening your communications capabilities, it can save you money on your telecommunications costs, and it can enable more productivity, mobility and flexibility in your workforce.

  • ECS Production Tour 2005: How to build a mainboard, ECS style   [Article, Hexus]
The final production testing is done by skilled technicians who have the ability to test two at a time, in tandem. They've got some test hardware that I'm jealous of (fast-removal memory modules, CPU heatsinks that don't need full attachment, PCI and PCI Express logic testers, etc.) and can have a mainboard fully functionally tested in a matter of minutes.

  • X-Arcade Two-Player Joystick Review   [Review, Bjorn3d]
The popularity of retro or classic gaming never seems to diminish. In fact, it seems to only get stronger as the gamer population gets older. With that increasing popularity, comes the desire to play old school games in a way that is as old school as possible. Playing Galaga or Pac-Man with a gamepad just doesn't feel right, not even close. That's why a company like XGAMING came along and created high quality arcade-style joysticks to satisfy that desire. Many of you have no doubt discovered all the wonders of MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) and other emulators out there, but you may have yet to realize that there are far better alternatives than that Microsoft SideWinder gamepad and that crusty keyboard of yours for controlling the games you play. XGAMING currently offers a solo and dual joystick, called the X-Arcade Solo and X-Arcade Two-Player, respectively.

  • Investigative Report: Why You Shouldn't Always Unsubscribe From Emails   [Article, extensiontech]
This all started from me being spammed by some "Online Adult Dating Service" spam email. Of course my Spam Assassin caught it, and labeled it appropriately though. I guess I just had some weird inclination to go look around. No, no, not at the dating service, but at the website. You see, the website was buried in some folders, and just seemed odd to me. It only took me a minute or two, and then I realized there was no index file on the root of the web server. You know what that means don't you?

  • CTS 2005: BTX - Fear the factor   [Article, Hexus]
As an owner of one of Shuttle's devices, I was hoping that the newcomer could take a high-end graphics card. Sadly, though, the answer was no. The SB86i is aimed at the business market and fitting such a card wasn't thought to be a good idea at all. And that, I fear, will be same with most SFF BTX models. Your average graphics card is no problem but these tiny boxes can't take the sorts of card that gamers want to use. Their low-noise fans simply can’t deal with the heat, and there's no obvious way of getting sufficient air throughput to prevent things starting cooking.
