Darwin in Action: iPod Kills RIO, Microsoft Kills iPod [Editorial, DesignTechnica]
This week, D&M holding killed the RIO line of MP3 players because they simply could not compete with the iPod. What makes this amazing is that a few years ago the RIO, then owned by S3, was competing with Creative Labs for this market and was largely believed to be the company to beat. Apple came out of nowhere as a failing PC company and not only took the market away from Creative Labs and RIO, but grew the market to be vastly larger than before. GameTrak Hardware Review [Review, Hardware.GamersHell]
Over the years gaming has been made accessible through a number of successful peripherals like joy pads, steering wheels, flight sticks and less successful ones like virtual reality goggles and gloves that control movement. In this big sea of gaming accessories, it’s difficult to be innovative, but In2Games has done just that. They have concocted a device that lets you control movement in the game by moving your hands. Now you’re probably thinking that this is nothing new, but the way In2Games has implemented this concept is not like anything you’ve seen before. PC Silencing Guide - Part 1 [Guide, Hardware.GamersHell]
Graphics cards, processors and almost every other component inside our PCs become increasingly powerful with each generation, and, as a result, often consume more power and produce more heat than the previous generation. Do we just have to accept that in order to cool these hot running components, PCs will continue to just get louder and louder? Not necessarily. Inteview :: Marko Hein, Nintendo [Interview, Hexus]
What is revolutionary about Nintendogs is the control
interface… It really is hands-free, using real voice recognition.
When you first choose a dog from all the breeds available, you use
the touch screen to pet it and stroke it, and while you’re doing
this, the game prompts you to give your dog a name. You can call it
anything and the game will ask you a few times to repeat the name, so
it records your voice and the sound to then associate that sound with
the dog’s name… After while you’ll be able to open up the DS, turn
the game on and call your dog, who’ll then come over. You can
interact with your dog purely by using your voice without even having
to have the DS in your hands… Sat, 03 Sep, 2005 | 3 Click(s) | Related: Reviews or Talks | Detail

FingerGear Computer-on-a-Stick Review [Review, HardwareCentral]
And now FingerGear has put not just data, not just applications, but a whole operating system on a keychain. The $149 Computer-on-a-Stick is a bootable USB flash drive that carries a modified Debian Linux 2.6 OS and Gnome 2.8 desktop along with the Microsoft Office-compatible OpenOffice.org suite, Firefox browser, GAIM instant-messaging client, and other programs.
The idea is that you plug it into almost any x86 system, reboot, and enjoy the same work environment no matter what is or isn't installed on the PC. When you're done, you shut down and put the Stick back in your pocket, leaving no files, bookmarks, cookies, or browsing history on the host machine. The only part of the device accessible by the host is a "public" folder, which works like any other flash drive to transfer files to and from other PCs. John Bruno of ATI - Fish and chips? Oh yes [Interview, Hexus]
HEXUS: So does that 12 months include sending the chip back
for any respins? Actually, did RS480 need any respins at all? We
heard whispers within ATI that your team is known for getting silicon
back working with performance and stability you could probably ship
with?
John: Well, we do well with that side of things. RS480 came back
working first time and got a silicon spin for some minor stuff before
we went to full production. We could probably have shipped the bridge
on A11 if we wanted to, though. Now this is a cool story. RS482,
which is the 110nm shrink of RS480, we got that back in a full
package, first silicon, and nine minutes after getting the package we
had it up and running, playing Doom. That's nine minutes from being
handed the package, getting it onto a socket on the board, getting
the BIOS set and booting the OS, before getting Doom up and running
on the core. Tue, 16 Aug, 2005 | 4 Click(s) | Related: Reviews or Talks | Detail

Fate - An RPG for PC [Review, TrustedReviews]
In Fate, things are very different. In this RPG, man’s best friend or lil’ kitty is a hardened warrior, taking on hordes of kobolds without a thought for personal safety. What’s more, Rex or Tigger can fetch and carry vast amounts of weapons, armour and jewellery, then run up from the dungeons, flog it in town, and race back with the proceeds in a thrice. Even better, with the right food they transform into a vicious wolf, a giant spider, a fire-breathing lizard, a hideous walking brain, or one of a host of other monstrous forms, all the better to fight by your side. Imagine Dungeon Siege’s mule with added offensive capabilities and a whole lot of baby-faced charm. It’s a wonderful idea, and Fate has a dozen more where that came from. Quakecon 2005 - Day 1 [Article, Bjorn3d]
Welcome one and all to Quakecon 2005 from the beautiful and enormous Gaylord
Texan Convention Center and Hotel in Grapevine, TX. Well over 6,000 are
expected to attend one of the largest LAN party and gaming expos in the world.
I can tell you first hand that it is definitely quite the show once again this
year.
Already several thousand people have packed themselves into what is basically a
room the size of...oh....4 football fields. Monitors glow in every direction,
and the gaming is in full effect. Oh yeah, and this lasts for the next three
days too. Sat, 13 Aug, 2005 | 3 Click(s) | Related: Reviews or Talks | Detail
Quakecon 2005 - Day 2 [Article, Bjorn3d]
Day two of Quakecon has been been an eventful one for us as we got inside looks
at Doom the movie, met with vendors, toured the booths, and saw the tournaments
bring out the real competition.
First looks at the Doom were impressive as the realism and likeness to the game
were amazing. The movie is even complete with a two to three minute sequence of
monster destroying in first person. All attendees were also given looks into
the making of movie with plenty of pictures of the making of the monsters. From
the trailer they showed the movie will contain plenty of action, blood and
violence so leave the kids at home for this one. Sat, 13 Aug, 2005 | 2 Click(s) | Related: Reviews or Talks | Detail
