But first I want to say a word about the new “infinity” series of motherboards. Sat, 27 Sep, 2003 | 16 Click(s) | Related: Reviews or Talks | Detail
DFI LanParty NForce II Ultra [Review, TheTechLounge]
You may remember our review of the DFI Lan Party KT400a with it's unique looks and numerous accessories. If you frequent LAN parties or like to show off your rig, you might have considered this great board. Sadly, there was one disadvantage, the board overclocks a bit better than a poundcake with a processor jammed in it.. Thankfully, DFI produces a NForce II Ultra based motherboard in the Lan Party series, and if the board makes good use of the NForce II chipset, your overclocking worries may be over. So follow along my friends, as we venture into the mysterious world of... well... umm... motherboards. Yeah. Sat, 27 Sep, 2003 | 85 Click(s) | Related: Reviews or Talks | Detail
Abit's IC7-MAX3 [Review, HotHardware]
You definitely have to hand it to the engineers at Abit Computer. While many motherboard manufacturers are taking steps to differentiate their board from the masses, by bundling in gimmick goodies, like FrontX drive bay boxes and travel bags, Abit has been delivering breakout innovative motherboard designs, that call attention to themselves all on their own. Abit's "MAX" series of motherboards was the first and currently the only design approach, that completely eliminates legacy serial and LPT ports, in favor of USB 2.0 and Firewire connectivity. Pack in some rounded IDE cables, your standard assortment of SATA cabling, fashion on a killer chipset heat-sink and one would think Abit went the distance, to deliver something new and exciting in a motherboard. However, the engineers at Abit recently decided to go a few steps further. Thu, 25 Sep, 2003 | 57 Click(s) | Related: Reviews or Talks | Detail

Gigabyte 8S655FX Ultra (SiS 655FX): Price/Performance Reaches a New Level [Review, AnandTech]
Weeks ago, SiS introduced their SiS 655FX chipset to a rather uninterested crowd of enthusiasts who were already immersed with the latest 865PE and 875P motherboards. Understandably so, motherboard makers haven’t been too keen on the SiS 655FX because of Intel’s great success with the 865PE and 875P chipsets in the enthusiast market (though, Intel obviously didn’t have any competitors, until now that is). FIC KT-748 Motherboard Review [Review, MBReview]
It was only a few weeks ago that we had the pleasure of taking a look at the first FIC motherboard to enter the MBR testing labs, and today we have yet another review for you from the likes of FIC. This time, we will be taking a look at their latest AMD offering, the KT-748, which consists of the relatively unknown SiS748 chipset. SiS has rarely been a real fan favorite when it comes to overall performance, but their chipsets do offer comparable performance and usually offer a better price point for the budget conscious buyers. With the new SiS748 chipset appears a new technology, something SiS calls “Hyper-Streaming.” I will be covering this new technology in far more detail in our upcoming SiS655FX review, but for now to keep things simple, this technology work to lower latencies throughout the system in order to improve performance to the levels of today’s more well-known dual channel chipsets. Today we’ll be taking a look at whether or not the KT-748’s Hyper-Streaming can keep up with the KT600’s FastStream64 on the Abit KV7. Gigabyte GA-8S655FX Ultra SiS655FX Motherboard [Review, PCStats]
SiS are easily one of the hottest tech companies in the world right now when it comes to core logic. However, while the company has produced some very remarkable chipsets in the last little while, there are still some parties that can't shake the 'low end chipset provider' moniker, even though it is wildly outdated. It would seem as though SIS' past reputation still haunts them, but as long as the company stays true to the current path, there is no doubt they are set to take the chipset world by storm. Balanced Technology eXtended (BTX) Form Factor - The Future of Cases & Motherboards [Article, AnandTech]
As is made evident by the proliferation of Small Form Factor (SFF) machines into the market, the need for a smaller, quieter successor to ATX has been building over the past 8 years. A couple of IDFs ago, Intel announced their development of the successor to ATX, which was codenamed Big Water. At the Fall 2003 Intel Developer Forum, Intel officially branded Big Water as the Balanced Technology eXtended form factor - or BTX for short. Asus A7N8X-X [Review, OCAddiction]
Asus is the top manufacturer of motherboards in the world. They make retail motherboards as well as OEM boards for OEM companies like Hewlett Packard. My old Hewlett Packard was powered by an OEM Asus motherboard and the Intel Pentium III processor. The performance and reliability of an Asus motherboard is top notch. They never fail to satisfy their consumers. Visiting forum to forum and looking around computer stores, I have realized that the many buyers choose Asus motherboards. From socket 370 to socket A to socket 478, Asus has a top performing board that will surely impress its user. Heck, I still have my Asus CUSL2 Black Pearl that's running a Pentium III 550. It overclocks like a champ! With such a great performance comes a great price. Not all Asus motherboards are cheap. The A7N8X Deluxe v2.0 and the P4C800 Deluxe are quite expensive. Asus now aims at lower budget consumers, thus the production of the Asus A7N8X-X. Based on the nForce2 chipset, Asus strips the original board of some features and sells it at an affordable cost. EPoX 8RDA3G nForce2 Ultra 400 [Review, Hexus]
The nForce2's bandwagon keeps rollin'. That's in spite of VIA's, and SiS' to a lesser extent, push for present Socket A performance leadership. However, with rumblings of hither-to unseen performance from AMD's very latest 64-bit CPUs, 32-bit AMD processors will soon be shoved out of the limelight. Right now, though, the Barton and nForce2 bundle is pretty appealing, especially with the jam-packed nForce2 providing all manner of integrated extras. ASUS P4P800S-E: Standing Out in the Crowd [Review, AnandTech]
ASUS announced their 848P motherboard in the middle of last month to a rather neutral reception. Intel’s 848P chipset went relatively unnoticed when it was introduced the weeks prior to ASUS’ 848P motherboard press release, so users were understandably unexcited when they heard about an 848P motherboard. However, this wasn’t too surprising, considering the 848P’s specs; a single channel DDR400 chipset aimed at the value market. This chipset, unlike older single channel DDR motherboards based on the 845PE chipset, supports 800MHz FSB Pentium 4 processors. Essentially, the 848P chipset is an 865PE chipset with one channel disabled. Not too many enthusiasts of any market segment would seemingly be interested in a product like this. However, from what we’ve gathered so far, 848P motherboards will be specifically built as cheap products with tremendous price/performance value. Indeed, this is what we have seen with the ASUS P4P800S-E and why we are reviewing it today. Wed, 17 Sep, 2003 | 162 Click(s) | Related: Reviews or Talks | Detail
