  • Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 955 and 975X Chipset Review   [Review, pcper]
Today Intel is announcing the introduction of a new Pentium Extreme Edition processor, the Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 955. Based on the Presler core that we original saw mentioned during the Intel Developer Forum in March of this year, this core is more or less just a die shrink of the existing Pentium architecture. As is typical with Intel and new processor technologies, the Extreme Edition 955 processor is coupled not with the Intel 955 chipset but instead with a new core logic chipset in the form of the Intel 975X. This chipset brings several new features and performance options that might help it actually be of interest to enthusiasts and gamers.

  • GeForce 6100 and nForce 400 preview   [Preview, Bjorn3d]
Today nVIDIA is throwing its hat back into the integrated video market again. Last time they where in it was with the nForce 2 product line. nForce2 was aimed at the enthusiast market for the most part, this time they are aiming for corporate desktop, media center machine and what I call the inexpensive mom and pop machine.

  • nForce4 410 and 430 with GeForce 6100 and 6150 Announcement   [Preview, Hexus]
The TV encoder on the 6150 supports component, S-Video and compostive out, as well as a TMDS for DVI support. DVI on the mainboard backplane will be cool to see. Both chips are also able to be passively cooled, bringing us on nicely to the announcement that these two parts and NVIDIA's first graphics products created on a 90nm process. Manufactured by TSMC, the 90nm process allows NVIDIA to back the transistors needed for the 6100 and 6150 into a chip package small enough and frugal enough to sit on the mainboard and be passively cooled even at top clocks.

  • ULi M1695 HyperTransport PCI Express Tunnel Chip   [Preview, HardwareZone]
The M1695 is ULi's latest Athlon 64 core logic solution, but this isn't your momma's traditional chipset. The M1695 features HyperTransport as a universal interconnect for vast configuration flexibility and TGi for true PCIe, AGP and PCI operation simultaneously.

  • nForce 4 SLI X16: Full Speed PCI Express   [Preview, AnandTech]
Ever since its launch in the fall of last year, nForce 4 has brought us SLI capability. Configurations for PCI Express slots in nForce 4 SLI motherboards must be selected by using a paddle that can be flipped to allow for either 2 x8 connections or full bandwidth for one with the other disabled. There is added flexibility on an nForce 4 SLI motherboard, but this flexibility comes with some limitations. Today, NVIDIA sheds the shackles of the paddle selector and limited bandwidth with the new nForce 4 SLI X16 chipset.

  • Sapphire PURE PI-A9RX480 - ATI's Chipset for the AMD Enthusiast   [Preview, AnandTech]
The talk of Computex was ATI's new Crossfire dual-video solution for AMD and Intel, but those of you who have been following ATI's chipset development realize the road to Crossfire has been a long one - and one that continues. When AnandTech looked at the introduction of RX480/RS480 chipsets for AMD last November, we found the performance of the new chipsets very impressive. ATI had done a particularly excellent job targeting the enthusiast for the new chipset launch, but that realization seemed to come late in the chipset development process. This meant that this excellent chipset was largely ignored by motherboard manufacturers who had already pegged the new ATI parts for Micro ATX integrated video parts for OEMs.

  • FIRST LOOK: ULi M1695 PCIe/AGP Socket 939 for Athlon 64   [Preview, AnandTech]
As we reported form Computex, the talk of the show was ATI's new Crossfire dual-video solution for AMD and Intel. Part of that talk was the development work done with ULi on the ATI South Bridge and the cross-compatibility of the ULi South Bridge using the ATI chipset. ULi is what remains of the ALi chipset division of Acer, and this now independent chipmaker has been very busy in several arenas. In addition to South Bridges which can work with the chipsets of other manufacturers, ULi also makes single-chip and dual-chip solutions for Athlon 64.

  • Intel i945G Chipset   [Preview, Hexus]
In short, the i945G (or i945P) is a reasonable proposition for all but the die-hard enthusiast who needs the ability to run two graphics cards in tandem. I hope that motherboard manufacturers quickly release versions equipped with the ICH7R southbridge. You'll then be able to purchase it with, say, a Pentium D 820. Perfect for huge and varied storage potential, decent sound, and the loveliness that a dual-core CPU brings.

  • Intel Pentium D Processor 820, Pentium 4 Processor 670 and 945 Express Chipsets   [Preview, Bjorn3d]
Focusing on the enthusiast and high-end workstation markets, Intel started its multi-core desktop campaign last month by introducing the 955X Express chipset and Pentium Processor Extreme Edition dual-core CPU. Today's release is aimed at the mainstream market, though. The new mainstream chipsets are the 945G Express Chipset and 945P Express Chipset (the 'G' variant providing onboard graphics), and the three new mainstream dual-core processors are the Pentium D Processor 820, 830 and 840, which run at 2.8GHz, 3.0GHz and 3.2GHz, respectively.

  • SLI Comparison : nVidia’s nForce4 SLI for Intel and AMD   [Article, GamePC]
The release of nForce4 SLI Intel Edition motherboards brings up an interesting question. Which platform is the better of the two for high-end gaming? There have been rumors floating around the web for several months that nVidia's nForce4 SLI Intel Edition was not performing up to par compared to the original nForce4 SLI for AMD. We were curious to see if these rumors have any merit to them. To settle this issue, we grabbed the fastest single-core gaming processors available from both Intel (3.73 GHz Extreme Edition) and AMD (Athlon64 FX-55) and placed them in their respective nForce4 SLI platforms of choice. In addition, we were able to get our hands on two brand-spanking-new GeForce 6800 Ultra PCI Express cards with 512 MB of memory, truly allowing for the most impressive SLI configurations on the planet today.

  • Intel Dual Core Extreme Edition CPU - 840 @ 955X Express   [Review, Hexus]
The 3.2GHz Pentium XE 840 is offered as an alternative to current single-core Extreme Edition CPUs. It may not quite have the pure gaming performance punch as, say, the 3.73GHz XE, but it's a better proposition when considered over a wide variety of applications. Think of it this way. The worst-case performance scenario is that the £650 Pentium XE 840 performs much like a single-core 3.2GHz 640 model. The best-case scenario, that is, being run with apps. that take advantage of its 4-thread parallel processing ability, is performance that no single-core Pentium 4 could ever hope to match, even under the most esoteric cooling.

  • NVIDIA nForce 4 Intel Edition   [Preview, Hexus]
NVIDIA has made a successful transition of its SLI tech. over to an Intel-based platform. SLI works exactly in the same way it does on a current AMD machine, and performance, if equivalent processors are used, is largely the same as a well-tuned AMD machine. Intel's 955X Express and the nForce4 SLI I.E opens up the market for a vast range of partners to launch pre-SLI'd machines. Expect the likes of Dell, an Intel-only partner, to have a number of configurations ready at short notice.
