  • Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-R1 Review   [Review, designtechnica]
This is probably the most anticipated digital camera this season and it’s due to be officially introduced mid-November for under $1,000. The just-introduced 12.8MP Canon EOS 5D ($3,299) was the other object de lust since it’s the world’s “smallest and lightest” full frame D-SLR. With full frame cameras there’s no “digital factor” so all lenses including fish-eyes are their true focal lengths. Before the 5D you’d have to spend seven grand to get this convenience. At this price the 5D is targeted to very serious photographers; the DSC-R1 is for mere mortals.

Unlike the compact memory cards used by digicams, the storage media for camcorders are still cumbersome by comparison. Along comes the JVC Everio MG50 with its built-in HDD that does away with external media all together. Will it set the pace for other manufacturers? Read on.

  • Creative WebCam Live! Motion   [Review, TrustedReviews]
The first affordable web camera with face tracking was the Logitech QuickCam Sphere which I reviewed almost two years ago. It was a pretty decent product but not as elegant a solution as I’d hoped for and the head tracking was a bit hit and miss. Now Creative has launched its WebCam Live! Motion – available in silver or white - and although I was shown an early model way back at CeBIT, it has taken this long for Creative to bring it to market.

  • Konica Minolta Dynax 5D - Digital SLR   [Review, TrustedReviews]
The Holy Grail for which all of the major camera manufacturers are questing is the affordable consumer digital SLR. They know that once a customer buys an SLR and a couple of lenses, they will most likely stay with the same brand for life, buying more lenses and accessories for their system, and occasionally upgrading the camera body. Manufacturers make a lot more profit from lenses than from either SLR camera bodies or zoom compacts, so market domination awaits for the company that can introduce the first real consumer SLR. Canon was the first to break the £1000 barrier with the highly successful EOS 300D, with Nikon, Pentax and Olympus quick to follow suit. The next big barrier is £500, and many models are now approaching this breakthrough price point.

  • Panasonic's Powerful Digicam: Lumix DMC-LX1S   [Review, PCWorld]
"Small and powerful" is no contradiction in terms with the latest point-and-shoot digital cameras. But Panasonic's $600 Lumix DMC-LX1S is even better equipped than most, starting with its amazing 8.4-megapixel CCD and wealth of advanced exposure controls. The camera's most intriguing feature, though, is its array of three image aspect ratios: 4:3, the typical digital camera ratio; 3:2, a match for 35mm film and perfect for 4-by-6-inch prints; and 16:9, the standard for wide-screen displays.

  • Casio Exilim EX-S500   [Review, designtechnica]
Mindboggling. That’s the only way to describe the ultra-tiny new 5-megapixel digicam from Casio. I’ve handled the vast majority of compact 5MP models with large LCD screens but the Casio Exilim Card EX-S500 is even smaller than the competition. And while camera’s LCD is screen is not as large as say the Sony T series (2.2 versus 2.5 inches), the overall package is appealing—on paper. Unfortunately this camera is far from perfection personified but it is a tour de force of miniaturization. Now if they only spent as much time on photo quality…

  • Konica Minolta Dimage X1   [Review, TrustedReviews]
Konica Minolta’s Dimage highly successful X-series represents the original ultra-compact digital camera range. When the first of the line, the 1.9 megapixel Dimage X, was launched in early 2002, it was by far the smallest and lightest digital camera on the market, and also had one of the fastest start-up times. It achieved both of these feats thanks to an innovative lens design.

  • Goodmans G-Shot 3027TFT - Budget Digital Camera   [Review, TrustedReviews]
Now however the situation is reversed. The vast majority of digital cameras are very good, so writing a review tends to become an exercise in nit-picking, finding small faults in otherwise excellent products. While there are still some extremely bad cameras around they are usually instantly recognisable and easy to avoid, while nearly all of the cameras produced by the big name brands are safely above mediocrity. It is with some relief therefore that I come to write this review of the latest model from the well-known Goodmans brand. In a market filled with cameras ranging from the superb to the merely adequate the G-Shot 3027TFT comes as a refreshing change.

  • Hitachi DZ-GX20A Camcorder   [Review, DesignTechnica]
It’s really amazing, how much smaller the new fifth generation DVD camcorders are compared to their pioneering cousins. Still, the DZ-GX20A weighs 1.2 pounds and measures 4.8W x 3.4H x 2D", so it’s not something you’ll drop in your pocket (unless you’re wearing cargo pants.) Camcorders are a commitment, not for spur-of-the-moment memory recording, so expect to buy a bag to hold your extra discs, spare battery, recharger, and so on.

  • Olympus Stylus 800   [Review, DesignTechnica]
The Olympus Stylus 800 is not the prettiest or slimmest baby on the block. With a nondescript shape, the all-metal camera is much thicker than competing slim digicams with 2.5-inch screens such as the Sony Cybershot T series, Fujifilm FinePix Z1 and other popular models (they’re only 5MP models though). The camera measures 4.1 x 2.3 x 1.3 (WHD, in inches) and weighs 7.4 ounces with battery. Forget about putting this one in a shirt pocket but it’ll fit nicely in a pants or jacket pocket.

  • Pentax Optio SVi - Digital Camera   [Review, TrustedReviews]
When the vast majority of compact digital cameras have 3x optical zoom lenses, a camera that offers a larger 5x zoom range, while still remaining small enough to slip into a jacket pocket, is going to have a distinct advantage. The Optio SVi is the latest addition to Pentax’s already extensive range of 5 megapixel compact cameras, and offers just such a bonus. Priced at an extremely competitive £195, it is positioned toward the upper end of the compact snapshot market, and does offer some very useful creative features for the more experienced photographer.
